Abstract

Home care for patients with diabetes has experienced significant growth, reflecting the importance of ensuring quality care within a global context seeking sustainable pathways for the healthcare sector. This article explores the complexity of home care, encompassing comprehensive managerial practices and clinical activities, yielding benefits for patients alongside financial and epidemiological indicators. In Brazil, home care has seen important milestones, such as the establishment of the Home Medical and Emergency Care Service (Samdu) in 1949 and the implementation of similar services in institutions like the Hospital for São Paulo State Public Workers starting in 1968. The development of the Family Health Program (FHP) and the Interdisciplinary Home Care Unit (NADI) has further propelled home care, both in the public and private sectors, covering basic aids to psychosocial support. This study explores and analyses home care for patients with diabetes through a literature review. The employed methodology involves critical analysis of reliable sources and pertinent bibliographic citations, aiming to contribute to the development and enhancement of home care practices. The results highlight the significant benefits of home care, the efficacy of the FHP, the importance of home visits to understand living conditions, as well as educational and care actions contributing to reducing factors leading to neglect. The challenges and limitations of this care modality are also addressed, emphasizing the importance of training and qualifying involved professionals. Home care is underscored as an essential tool in patient care, emphasizing the need to develop effective strategies for its implementation and improvement. Home care is recognized as fundamental for health promotion and the enhancement of clinical and epidemiological outcomes.
