Abstract

The corpus callosum is one of the main and largest bundles of interhemispheric association fibers in the telencephalon. Its agenesis is a congenital malformation with a prevalence of 1 to 3 per 1000 live births. Complete agensia of the body can cause substantial changes in the function of the nervous system. Agenesis of the corpus callosum can be diagnosed in isolation, however, it may be associated with other syndromes or anomalies present. Exams such as magnetic resonance imaging and fetal ultrasound are used to diagnose this change. Both methods have strengths and limitations. The objective of the study was to compare the methods of magnetic resonance imaging and fetal ultrasound for diagnosing agenesis of the corpus callosum. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging are sensitive to identifying agenesis of the corpus callosum during prenatal examinations. Although ultrasound is easy, low-cost and the exam is in real time, magnetic resonance imaging has greater sensitivity and can characterize changes in the corpus callosum more precisely, however it cannot be performed in the first trimester like ultrasound. Although imaging methods have limitations and differences, studies demonstrate that the diagnosis of corpus callosum agensia can be made using ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
